Ireland is a country rich in cultural traditions. Visitors will find themselves under the spell of Irish warmth and hospitality. Ireland’s turbulent history, music and folklore are passionate areas of study.

Irish Studies

Reference: IHIS3 – 3 weeks

Ages: 16 to 18 years old

Language Level: at least two years of school English

Program Description:
The primary purpose for this homestay is to share a mutual passion: Ireland!

This program is taught and administered by a university professor of Dublin specializing in Irish studies. Subjects of study include: history and politics; traditions; literature and theatre; lectures and debates, a school play, a folkloric evening, three day trips, two of which will be to the western part of Ireland. Participants include French, Spanish, American and German students.

The course objective is to familiarize students with the interesting past of Dublin, as well as its art and culture. An excellent English level is required in order to participate during debates and to comprehend the documents being studied. Otherwise students will be unable to fully benefit from the proposed activities.

The courses will take place either at the instructor’s residence or in Cabinteely, a south Dublin suburb on the campus of a secondary school. Once courses and planned activities are finished for the day, students will have some spare time for a choice of sports. The school of Cabinteely has a modern gymnasium where students can play basketball, badminton, soccer and indoor hockey. Tennis instruction is also available.

The host families are located near the school. Each family receives only one participant at a time. However, depending on the host family, a number of foreign students may be accommodated simultaneously. The families of this homestay program are accustomed to receiving students throughout the entire year and will expect students to utilize free time in a beneficial manner.
